KING CHARLES III and QUEEN CAMILLA

The Colonial states declare their independence from England decades ago,
yet, as we go back those decades doing our American genealogy,
we often encounter roots in Britain - England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland and
"cross the ocean" to archives there.

As distanced as we Americans are,
many of our ancestors lived under a King or Queen, an Emperor,
or lived in a princely kingdom,
or were of the nobility, or lived on the land of one as a tenant farmer, or a serf.

We grew up with fairy tales, stories of Princesses and Princes of days gone by.

So, we cannot be ignorant of that history or the old ways in which our people
survived or thrived.

King Charles III's Coronation might be the only one some of us will ever witness - via televised film - in our own lifetimes.

The splendor!

I'm curious - and am be watching.

ALLAN BARTON - THE ANTIQUARY : AN OUTSTANDING ROYAL BRITAIN HISTORIAN! YOUTUBE STATION

I'm so impressed with the videos this man has posted so I'm highly recommending you learn more about Royal Britain -  the history - the coronations - the symbolic clothing - so many wonderful topics - by listening to his station.  His knowledge is expansive, he's well spoken and every video has plentiful pictures and illustrations.

Here is the link to the ALLAN BARTON - THE ANTIQUARY station on YouTube.

YOUTUBE ALLEN BARTON

In keeping with my policy to not embed videos that have commercials attached to them, I'm sending you to the video that turned me on to this station...

YOUTUBE BARTON ROBES and CORONETS OF THE NOBILITY

As he says, it's not likely that many of the invitees to King Charles III's coronation will be wearing the garments of the peerage, signaling to all who can read the codes, but here he details of their traditional garments worn for special events in the history of Britain.

This station is simply full of wonderful information!

TITLES OF NOBILITY?

Nobility titles and ranks vary depending on the country or ruling country. Of interest is also the history of when a title was invented. Usually a prevailing King or Queen could elevate a person to the peerage, as a reward, traditionally for defending their rulership through military service.  However, some families were so established long ago, the reasons why they are considered royal, or aristocracy, or noble, may be lost. They may have been from a founding tribe or clan, or have won or acquired great wealth and power. When men died out, the line might have been transferred through a woman's line. Hard to argue with someone who can build a fortress of stone when you live in a wood hut.

That changed in recent time to a reward for noteworthy success, consider the various celebrity entertainers such as musicians and actors who became Sir's during Queen Elizabeth's reign...  Sir Paul McCartney (James Paul McCartney) for an example.  However, very many of those who she elevated were known for service to the Kingdom or humanity, such as Sir Bob Geldof  (  Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof.)  Their wives are known as Ladies.

There are two types of peers who can be elevated.

Those who were born into it are recognized as HEREDITARY peers.

Those who were not, are called LIFE peers.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SURNAME MYSTERIES #6 CHECK THE LAWS FOR LEGAL NAME CHANGES BY COUNTRY and DATE

HOW TO DEAL WITH SURNAME MYSTERIES  #6 CHECK THE LAWS FOR LEGAL NAME CHANGES BY COUNTRY and DATE

I found this interesting article on legal name changes in GREAT BRITAIN!

NATIONAL ARCHIVES UNITED KINGDOM : NAME CHANGES

Every state in the United States has laws on the books now about legal name changes.  Is it even necessary?  I think so because of all the other documents one needs to change that require proof.

Do your research on those laws when you think that a name change may solve a surname mystery!

This post is one of a series on the subject.  Click on the tag Surname Help - AWG to get to the posts.

MIXED RACE SLAVE OWNERS IN BARBADOS and THE REPARATIONS CONTROVERSY : BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH FAMILY HERITAGE

I feel, based on what I learned over the years through genealogy that the question of Reparations for the bad deeds of ancestors is at best complicated and unworkable.  To be fair I believe that DNA tests as well as genealogies of all would be necessary and math would have to be applied. That's because you cannot know by looking at a person if they are Black or have Black ancestry, and even when this seems quite apparent, you cannot know other details such as how long the family line has lived in, say, the United States, or had citizensip.

I currently have a friend who was born in Britain, whose mother took the family to New York but who still has a grandmother in England, who comes from this Island - sugar plantation - heritage of slavery. However, she now has American citizenship as do her children. So I ask you, how would we figure out just how much money, if any, she is owed?  Would she, because she is visibly Black, also get California money? The fact is it would probably cost as much to do this type of program fairly as the payout, and to me that is unworkable.

In this article, by Sue Reid for Daily Mail, discusses the slave owning heritage and mixed race ancestors of the family of actor Benedict Cumberbatch, not only is there a reveal about race but also that historically there have been payouts that benefited the family.

DAILY MAIL : REPARATIONS DEBATE by Sue Reid

I first encountered the historical reality that went against assumptions - and even classroom learning - when in a genealogy search for a client I found that his ancestors were both those who were marched during the Trail of Tears as well as those who forced the marching. His early ancestors had mixed race families with Native Americans and on census some children in some families were listed as B - Black - but they were actually part Cherokee. Also, a few of his cousins a few times removed married Cherokee and moved from the settlers to the tribe so very likely today those relatives are members of the tribe. There were also Native American slave holders in the area. Though most people who owned slaves had one or two and those slaves lived in with the family (yes, believe it or not) this particular Native American had a couple dozen slaves farming for him.

There are no absolutes when it comes to history and as a genealogist I'm concerned that the documents lead to history, not a reworking of it.

Like the author of this article, I too believe that at least in some of the mixed race unions, in which marriage was not legally possible, there was love or at least the possibility of love. That said, the role of women in general was so not equal to that of the men, and genealogy has reinforced my feminism. (As an example as President, Thomas Jefferson had to obey the law, and the law forbid him to marry Sally Hemings.)

This article, especially considering that it was published by Daily Mail, which is a a tabloid rather than a hard news venue, does an excellent job of showing why there is controversy.

***

All that said, being against Reparations does not mean that I'm against giving a hand up to those who need it. This is best done in a quiet and personal way.  One should not assume, however, that a person needs help simply because they are a certain race, or that they do not need it because they are a certain race.

A TOUR OF THE ALTHORP ESTATE GRAVEYARD (PRINCESS DIANA SPENCER's FAMILY) : IS THE ISLAND REALLY HER GRAVE?

I had no idea there was a possibility that Princess Diana, the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, may not be buried on the island on her family estate.  But while watching videos after the death of Queen Elizabeth II I found this video.  I had thought about how her grave might not be water resistant, though there are probably ways to make it so.  Well, take the tour because there is a church, Saint Mary;s, first built in about 1200  I don't have a problem with the Memorial because it's carved wood rather than real marble. Nineteen generations of the Spencer family buried in their private chapel area....

US IMMIGRATION ACT OF 1924 : MAIDEN VOYAGES

Note : This excerpt is about what was happening after the US Immigration Act of 1924 that was more restrictive than that of 1921. The government felt that America was overloading with the unskilled laborers that had come in previous decades.

EXCERPT:  The U.S. Immigration Act of 1924 was even more restrictive than that of 1921.  The total number of European immigrants now allowed in annually was slashed to 161,5000 in any one year.  By comparison, in 1913. 1.141 million European immigrants had been admitted to the U.S.  In addition, visas were now required, and those were issued by US Consular offices in the countries of origin.  Any shipping line bringing in an immigrant without a visa, or surplus to the annual quota allowed to that country, could face a punitive $1000 penalty.  Immigration figures plummeted though some nations were still favored over others: British and Irish-born immigrants were allowed a generous proportion of the annual European allocation, and anglophones with valuable skills, such as British-born servants or nurses, were actively encouraged to emigrate to the North American continent.  (page 76)

Would-be immigrants could be deported if they showed signs of physical  or mental illness, but less well known is the discrimination against the illiterate.  Adults arriving at Ellis Island were required to read out loud forty words of a printed language - any language -; a wide variety of texts were supplied - to prove they were literate. This discrimination policy often split up families, and it particularly effected women from remote and traditional communities in eastern Europe, who were less likely to have been taught to read  (page 78)

THE BERLIN AIRLIFT - VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE'S SUGGESTION to AID UKRAINE'S CITIZENS

Today is Saint Patrick's Day in the United States, a celebration of Irishness.  More specifically Catholic Irish and the wearing of the Green.  (Protestant Irish is the wearing of the Orange.) Though it's said everyone has a wee bit of Irish, and I tend to think of that meaning in spirit, I'm actually one of those Americans who has no Irish roots at all. (Several of my extended family members married Irish roots people and so the wee bit of Irish trope holds true in their children and grand children.) Never the less, it doesn't take personally having roots in a certain ethnicity or country to do the research or to understand the contributions of Irish Americans to the United States of America.

This morning as I prepared to post about Irish genealogy, I was listening to the latest war news.  Having spent the last 22 days listening and reading about the war perpetrated by Russia against Ukraine, I've wondered what I could possibly say or do that would be appropriate. I have cried. I'm frustrated. I'm confused.  I'm scared - in particular that more people on this earth are going to starve.

You see, I live in a city that already has thousands of "refugees" native to this land, the homeless. I do not think that we can absorb more refugees from any nation locally.  Of course if a person is coming in from Ukraine to be supported by relatives, I would never object to that. The situation is tricky because there is most certainly a huge population of illegal immigrants here and large zones of the city have been taken over by certain ethnic groups, not because they were - as happened in the past - unable to live anywhere else and ghettoized. Rather there is an attitude that this is not the United States while accepting and relying upon every government program and benefit that we as a whole finance.

There is not enough affordable housing and people with long waits for Section 8 housing (a government program that pays some or most of the rent) have difficulty finding a landlord to rent to them. People who are working two jobs cannot afford to rent a one bedroom apartment and are in a room. The problem has been in the works for decades and our politicians and officials are part of the problem.

The other day I heard a British man - I think this was the House of Commons - talking about the $350 a month thank you that the British government is willing to pay people who will take in Ukrainian refugees. He mentioned the thousands in that country who are in "bed-sits" already.  It's the same situation.

Canada's offer to take all who come is the most realistic frankly.  There is plenty of room in Canada. 80% of the population there lives within 100 miles of the Unites States border. Already a huge Ukrainian roots based population is in Canada.

As I watch apartment buildings being blown up in Ukraine, I realize it is going to cost millions to rebuild apartments to rehouse the Ukrainians. Ukraine is where Ukrainians need to live.

It has been said by various persons in recent days that the West forgot World War II.  I think that may be possible in the United States since The Greatest Generation is dying out and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren only have them to tell about that experience in Europe, in Japan, and domestically. (If this is your family be sure to interview and record your World War II era members about their lives before they pass.  Many have to be prompted.)

However, I do not think Europe has forgotten because the war was carried out on their land and their cities. I  think that memory, that HISTORY, is a factor in the overall ability to understand what the threat of Russia to Ukraine and to Europe is.

Things have changed since World War II.  Now there is a much higher threat of using nuclear bombs that devastate whole cities and regions.  There is greater variety of lethal weapons, including the potential of germ warfare, and surveillance and communication have changed our lives and how warfare is conducted.

I hate war, I hate violence, and it concerns me that there are so many humans on this earth who seem to be filled with hatred and do not create, cure, improve or enhance life, but destruct.

Ex Vice President Mike Pence made the statement that he thought the Berlin Airlift was an inspiration.  He thought we should be taking Humanitarian aid into Ukraine.  I would love it if something like this could be done, if those participating could be assured of their safety.

The evidence is that civilians are being targeted. Russia, Russian Military, and Russian soldiers who use civilians as target practice should be ashamed but apparently are not ashamed and also apparently are lacking any spirituality.  Well, this is where I, as someone partial to reincarnation, and various Christian groups that talk about redemption (the deathbed confession or conversion at the last minute) differ.  While any one of us can theoretically hit the restart button and be Born Again, I do not believe all that one did before is slate whipped clean, as if a person filed bankruptcy.  There is a price to pay for harming others.  And if it is not paid for on this corrupt earth in life, then there is still payment due.

I feel certain that those committing war crimes, upon their own death, will feel every bit of pain they have caused not just to the individual but their entire family. I am not God and do not know exactly how it works, but the testimonials of those who have had Near Death Experiences is rather consistent.  These people report reviewing their lives, being told they need to go back, and often totally transform their lives with much less emphasis on materialism and ego, and a greater care and concern for other human beings.

I found this mini documentary on the BERLIN AIR LIFT.

DNA WAS CONSIDERED IN FIGHT OVER PRINGLE OF STICHILL BARONETTE

DAILY MAIL : QUEEN DEMANDS DNA TEST TO DETERMINE BARONET TITLE by Martin Beckford

I tripped across this old article about the fight over a Baronet Title. Excerpt:  Her Majesty personally ordered Lord Neuberger, Britain's most senior judge, and seix other justices of the Supreme Court to rule on a bitter family dispute over who is the rightful heir to an ancient baronetcy.

The feud was unexpectedly sparked by an innocent family tree project involving a distinguished lineage dating back to the 13th Century.

BRITAIN AND A TRANSGENDER INCLUSIVE 2021 CENSUS

Transgenderism is at issue in Great Britain when it comes to census taking. In the last several months the issue of asking a person if their gender is currently what it was at their birth is quite controversial.  After reading through the development of the questions I chose this article for you to read:

ONS GOV UK CENSUS

There have been court actions which have furthered the discussion and I am not sure that the discussion has ended.  The very sensitive issue does come down to choice.  A person may consider themselves to be transgender but wanting to officially out themselves on a government document is something to think about.

Census' exist for statistic making, generally thought to understand populations when it comes to representation in government as well as funding for various purposes.

Frankly, having witnessed how many people want to dodge census takers in the United States and in recent times, I'd say trust that information is confidential is not so good.

IS QUEEN ELIZABETH IN PROPHET MOHAMMED'S BLOOD LINE ?

DAILY MAIL : QUEEN ELIZABETH IN PROPHET MOHAMMED BLOOD LINE

This story seems to have kept resurfacing over the last couple years.  This Daily Mail article is one of many articles that have appeared in print media and on the internet.  Archives of Spain, Burke's Peerage (the British authority on royal and aristocratic genealogy), and other countries with large Muslim populations are interested in the connection.  Would it help relationships between Christians and Muslims?  Diplomatically, maybe.  Religiously, I doubt it.

There is an impressive genealogy chart to look at: the connection would be through the Prophet's daughter Fatima.

Excerpt: They claimed the3 Queen descends from a Muslim princess called Zaida, who fled her home town of Seville in the 11th century before converting to Christianity.  Zaida was the fourth wife of King Al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad of Seville.  She bore him a son Sancho, whose descendant later married the Earl of Cambridge in the 11th century.

"BLACK BLOOD" ALREADY IN ROYAL FAMILY ? DIANA's INDIA HERITAGE

Baby Boy Sussex has been born and of course the world awaits that first photo.

WASHINGTON POST : BRITAIN'S BLACK QUEEN : Will Meghan Markle ... article by Deneen L. Brown

EXCERPT: Some historians suspect that Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, who bore the King 15 children, was of African descent.  Historian Mario De Valdes y Cocom argues that Queen Charlotte was directly descended from a black branch of the Portuguese royal family Alfonso III and his concubine, Ouruana, a black Moor.

In the 13th century, " Alfonso III of Portugal conquered a little town named Faro from the Moors," said Valdes, a researcher on the 1996 FRONTLINE PBS documentary, "Secret Daughter."  He demanded the governor's daughter as a paramour.  He had three children with her."

Read the full article at the link.  It's very interesting.

And then this older article:

ABROAD IN THE YARD: PRINCE WILLIAM DNA - INDIAN ANCESTRY
This article appeared in an Ancestry (The genealogy site) article.
Prince William will be the first British King with proven ancestry from India, a DNA test has revealed.  His rare mitochondrial DNA comes from his 5 X great grandmother, "a dark-skinned native of Bombay."

EXCERPT:  (Prince William's) genetic link to India was proven by saliva samples from relatives who share his direct maternal (mother Diana's) lineage to Eliza Kewark.  She lived at the start of the 19th century in western India, "Without benefit of matrimony," with his Scottish ancestor Theodore Forbes, an East India Company merchant. ...

Geneticist Dr. Jim Wilson of BritainsDNA, who carried out the tests, found that Eliza's descendants had an incredibly rare tpe of mtDNA (haplogroup R30b), so far recorded in only 14 other people - 13 from India and one from Nepal. Dr. Wilson said that the mtDNA results, combined with the findings of South Asian DNA in the rest of the genome, meant that the evidence of Prince William's Indian heritage was "unassailable."

NOTE: Eliza had been reported as "Armenian," in other articles.

THE ROYAL WEDDING and COATS OF ARMS

I'm getting up in the wee hours to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and his American bride Meghan Markle.  Reading around the subject of this wedding, here are some things you might find interesting.

1) It was required that Meghan, raised Catholic, convert to the Church of England and she did.
2) Her title, unless the Queen grants her and Harry other titles, will be Princess Henry i.e. this does not acknowledge her as a Princess but entitled because of her marriage.
3) Very likely, as she did when she created Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Queen will create Duke and Duchess title for Harry and Meghan Markle.
4) Like other things surrounding the Royal Wedding that people bet on, there is betting on which title the Queen will grant them. The decision is the Queen's but she is likely to consider the reputations of the last title holders and how long the title has been unused.
Right now it would seem that the Sussex title is a favorite.
5) So there are only so many titles that can be granted. Some sort of go into a long hibernation.
6) When Catherine Middleton became engaged to Prince William, one of the things her family had to collaborate on with the official coat of arms/shields people was a new one to represent the Middletons, specifically prior to the wedding, although they are commoners and the family does not have titles or have their rank raised.  As I understand it Michael Middleton, Catherine's father was especially helpful.  This coat of arms shows three acorns to indicate his three children.
7) Likewise, even if her father's heath was too poor for him to make an international flight to escort his daughter down the isle, the Markle's will likely also design a coat of arms to represent Meghan, though she will remain a commoner as will her family.

I did once spend time in England and did the quick tour of the Windsor Castle's grounds and around the small town it sits in.  It was an unexpected vacation that I took and I always said that I would like to go there again for a longer period and less formal touring.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN ATTITUDE ABOUT GENEALOGY IN GREAT BRITAIN VERSUS THE UNITED STATES?

I think so, but only because just about everyone I've talked to about this seems to think so.  The difference is this.  Americans seem to be much more focused on the immigration to a new country, and how much their ancestors earned their Americanism; the wars they fought, that they were pioneers, how the first and second generation suffered so that the next generations could succeed and have more opportunity, or the pride of the ancestor portraits on the wall that each come with a story of endeavors.  Supposedly in Great Britain and other European countries people do their charts without the connected stories and say "this is so."

But since I enjoy differing with the opinion, may I suggest that perhaps it's simply because Europeans, in particular those in England, GREW UP KNOWING THE STORIES, CONSIDER THEM FAMILIAL and PRIVATE - or COMMON KNOWLEDGE WITHIN THEIR SET, and think they will bore others and be rude if they tell on their ancestors.  In other words, is it the NEWNESS OF KNOWING THE STORY that makes American's so into the stories?

As a genealogist, I find my own familial stories and the stories that others tell me very interesting, and maybe that's one of the reasons I pursue this study, because I've never been bored by it.  I think I've learned so much more about history and cultures through ancestors and the research surrounding them than I ever did sitting in a classroom or lecture hall.
