400 YEARS AGO THE PILGRIMS LANDED IN AMERICA - THE MAYFLOWER SOCIETY

MAYFLOWER SOCIETY and 400th ANNIVERSARY in 2020

A friend of mine got a message regarding a DNA test she'd taken a couple years ago.  She hadn't checked her account in some time.  A man wrote that she might be related to a passenger on the Mayflower as he is related to her and he tested that he's a descendent of one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact,  Richard Warren who was married to Elizabeth Walker.

Uncanny!

Preliminary reading on the Internet:  this man and woman had the largest family and there may be thousands related to them at this point.  Genealogical there is some controversy and revisions.

There will be celebrations and do so hope that these can go on since we are in a plague time.

LAST VOYAGE OF THE LUSITANIA : NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DVD

The luxury Liner, the Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine - a maritime disaster.  Of the 1959 people aboard, 2/3rds died because it sank in 15 minutes - much faster than the Titanic.

Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic and the Bismarck beneath the sea, wanted to find the ship and through scientific means discover if perhaps it had been carrying secret arms or ammunition which could have blown up, making the damage so much worse.

I'm eager to find the ship manifests or a list of those who went down with the ship.

The National Geographic Society - the magazine - the exploration they fund - to me has always seemed like one of the best investments.  They fund quality exploration, films, and articles, time and time again...

ELLIS ISLAND IMMIGRANT PORTRAITS

PUBLIC DOMAIN REVIEW - ELLIS ISLAND IMMIGRANTS

EXCERPT: These images of people wearing their folk costumes were taken by amateur photographer Augustus Sherman who worked as the Chief Registry Clerk on Ellis Island from 1892 until 1925. The people in the photographs were most likely detainees who were waiting for money, travel tickets or someone to come and collect them from the island.

WILL NATIONAL LANDMARKS BE UNDER WATER IN THE FUTURE : NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ON CLIMATE CHANGE

This summer many people will spend vacation time touring NATIONAL LANDMARKS.  Will they be underwater in the next 20-30 years due to climate change, rising oceans, and so on?  As I read about the flooding in Serbia-Croatia-Belgrade and the wild fires in too dry California, I worry.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC - CLIMATE CHANGE - NATIONAL LANDMARKS

EXCERPT: "Along the Atlantic coast north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, sea levels have risen four times the national average, and historic downtowns face inundation. Boston's Faneuil Hall, where the Sons of Liberty plotted the Boston Tea Party, lies within the city's hundred-year tidal flood zone, which has experienced as many extreme high tides in the past decade as it had in the previous 80 years."

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GENOME PROJECT CONTINUES ON!

I wrote about the National Geographic Genome project a while back and today I decided to see what was happening with it, since I recently met a couple people who said they had paid the $199. and sent their results in to be shared.  I thought the project had ended, but apparently not.  It is ongoing and in real time!

GUNS GERMS AND STEEL : JARED DIAMOND : ANCESTRY WORSHIP GENEALOGY FILM REVIEW

I read the book GUNS GERMS and STEEL years ago and was impressed so I decided to watch the documentary, put out by National Geographic.

The documentary actually explained Diamond's theory more simply. It also explained that his initial research question was why there was such a discrepancy between the advantages or wealth of modern life by those of European descent versus the people in New Guinea who have lived the same way for 40,000 years.

The answer is not racist but it is tied in with the advantages of geography, which includes the advantages of weather and also natural food sources, the development of farming grains and domesticating animals, as well as the specter of disease, which killed more humans than soldiers with guns has.

So I say read the book or watch the video. Either way Jared Diamond is the original thinker (and researcher) they say he is.

GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY and YOU !

Click on the title above to get to the official site for the National Geographic Society's GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT... Now, my friend who told me about this said that participation is free and reading the site, this is not so. It costs about $100 for the kit you use to include yourself in the project, which aims to trace the human migration out of Africa and throughout the world. But this is an exciting project so check it out!
