SLAVE VOYAGES ORG - Trans-Atlantic Voyages link
I met someone recently who corrected me for calling someone "African American." She said I should be using the term BLACK. I suppose BLACK works if a person appears to be "Black" and you don't really know that their origins are from Africa. I think the whole subject is controversial and confusing. After all, some very Black looking people, with DNA analysis, prove to be mostly European and visa versa.
Anyway, I thought I'd revisit a link I've had posted a long time and explore further. SEARCHING THE VOYAGES, you will find THE NAME OF A SHIP, the name of the captain, the places where they picked up slaves (and no, it wasn't all from AFRICA, and where the ship is LANDING which could be Bahia or Brazil.)
What you will not find is the names of the enslaved.
YOU CAN FIND THE NAMES OF THE ONCE ENSLAVED IN TWO DATABASES.
I've found the FREEDMAN BANK RECORDS and SLAVE NARRATIVES, two different database / sites, to be more informative about individuals. I'm able to access both at my library without fees.

ELDERS by RYAN MC ILVAIN - A NOVEL ABOUT LDS : ANCESTRY WORSHIP GENEALOGY BOOK REVIEW
Elders - a Novel

ANCESTRY WORSHIP - GENEALOGY - BOOK REVIEW
I read this book wanting to know more about those young, white-shirted, LDS missionaries, mostly young men, you see all over - especially in libraries, where they e-mail home. These days some young women are also going on missions to other countries but you won't find them in this book. This book is about the conflict between two Elders (young missionaries in their early twenties) who have been teamed to go door to door, hoping to convert some people to the LDS Faith in Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of them is a native Brazilian who has converted, the other an American from Salt Lake, Utah who has some doubts about his personal faith.
The native Brazilian character begins to imagine himself immigrating to the United States, going to BTU, graduating, marrying, maybe even staying in the US and bringing his family over. Does he still want this religion if those things never happen for him?
The American character feels he has sacrificed life as is usually spent at his age - in school, having Friends, and having sex.
While I did learn a little bit about the organization of missionaries - predictable corporate, I found this book a strain to read. I knew the author had resigned his own LDS membership, and I wonder how much of it was autobiographical. The back of the book features some excellent reviews, but while I congratulate anyone who completes a book, this one left me with a dark feeling.
The missionaries not only have competitiveness and inter-personal problems that become physical and combative, but the American is dowsed with Anti-American feeling. The ending is a walk out.
EXCERPT:
page 237 (After a woman who wanted to be baptized into the faith despite her husband's disinterest is turned down for immediate baptism, and American character Elder McLeod questions this, because if it had been a man they would have gone ahead without his wife's cooperation.)
"My fellow missionaries, let me be as clear as I can. Our inspired leaders have told us to focus on teaching and baptizing families, self-sustain celestial units. This is an effort that matters, and matters everlastingly, and the Everlasting Enemy know this. We will therefore have to work harder than ever to call on God to help us. We will have to exert ourselves more than ever to be obedient and worthy of the Lord's helping hand. The noise of the world, indeed, can be deafening. We need shelter and protection from the world. W e need a place where we can hear ourselves think, a place to present the Gospel in the bright light of simple truth, And where can we find this shelter? Where do we find it? In the rules and regulations of our inspired leaders."
____
How does this jive with what I assumed or know about LDS missionaries? From my perspective these missions are is a rte of passage, one that gives youth a chance to see the world outside their home state, to see the world. It isn't just about converting others, it is about experiencing the challenges of being in a minority in the world and butting up against other religions and cultures. It is a test. Teaching anything you know reinforces that learning.
I know that many LDS members marry young - soon after their missions. Some of them have young women waiting for them at home, some (as happens in this book) loose their girlfriends while on a mission. I have heard from an LDS member that if a man does not marry young he may never marry, unless he marries a woman who is not of that religion. According to him, most women do eventually join the church.
It is also considered unusual for all of couple's children to stay in the religion. The world pulls on people.

19 MONTH OLD BABY DROWNED ON TITANIC IDENTIFIED WITH DNA OF SHOE
THE STAR - TINY SHOE ID'S TITANIC BABY link to full article
"New DNA evidence and a toddler’s shoe kept in a drawer for decades have solved the mystery of the Unknown Child from the Titanic who lies buried in Halifax.
Sidney Leslie Goodwin, 19 months old, drowned when the “unsinkable” ocean liner sank off Newfoundland on April 14, 1912. With him were his mother, father and five older brothers and sisters, all third-class passengers bound for a new life in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
“It was the shoe that tipped it,” genetics researcher Ryan Parr, vice president of Mitomics Inc. in Thunder Bay, told the Star on Wednesday.
Clarence Northover, a Halifax police sergeant in 1912 kept the shoe after helping guard the bodies and clothes of the few recovered Titanic victims. The idea at the time, said Parr, was to burn the clothing to thwart souvenir hunters. But Northover didn't want to burn the tiny shoe, so he put them it in his drawer at the police station...."

70 YEAR OLD TITANIC SURVIVOR HOAX SOLVED WITH DNA
SNET : DNA SOLVES ONE OF THE TITANICS OLDEST MYSTERIES\
"DNA has helped solved a nearly 70-year-old hoax -- one that has haunted a family and its ancestors in the debacle over the identity of a girl who was said to have died on the Titanic. ...
In 1940, 28 years after the Titanic went down, a woman named Helen Kramer appeared on a radio show claiming that she was Loraine Allison. She had an intricate story of being saved by the ship's designer and builder Thomas Andrews, who was also thought to have died on board. Kramer said she was raised in England before going to boarding school in the US.
For more than 50 years, Kramer adamantly lobbied the wealthy Allison family trying to prove that she was kin. But, for the most part, the family was skeptical of Kramer's claims and held her at arm's length."

YEAR OF THE HORSE - JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM
Over the last couple weeks my attention has been drawn by Asian (Should I say "Oriental?") celebrations.
I attended the Year of the Horse parade and celebration in China Town, Los Angeles, this year. Of course, there are now lots of Vietnamese in the area, as well as a "Little Tokyo" nearby. Within the city and surrounding area there are also a number of Buddhist Temples, Hindu Temples, and other organizations, some Christian synthesis, that believe in reincarnation and that are also culturally are involved in worship of the family and the ancestors.
The Japanese American national Museum has an archive that you may want to use if your ancestry includes those who came from Japan, not just to California, but also Hawaii, as well as exhibits about the Japanese-American soldiers who fought in World War II, the way Asians have been depicted in Comic Books,

I've heard Stephen (the correct spelling of his first name - but it's Steven on the website) speak a couple times and his enthusiasm is contagious! If you find frustration using another database, such as Ellis Island, using his utility may help you get to MISSING PAGES, and ALSO THE FIRST and SECOND CLASS PASSENGERS!

WE (ALMOST) ALL GOT HERE ONE WAY: ANCIENT HUMANS MATED WITH OTHER BREEDS OF HUMANS
NATURE : MYSTERY HUMANS SPICED UP ANCIENTS SEX LIVES
"All modern humans whose ancestry originates outside of Africa owe about 2% of their genome to Neanderthals. Certain populations living in Oceania, such as Papua New Guineans and Australian Aboriginals, share about 4% of their DNA with Denisovans, members of a group named after a cave in the Altai Mountains in Siberia, Russia, where they were discovered. The cave contains remains deposited between 30,000 and 50,000 years ago."
WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT THERE IS SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT THERE WERE DIFFERENT BREEDS (my word) OF HUMAN ANCESTORS LIVING AT THE SAME TIME AND THAT THEY INTERBRED.
I'm thinking of my dog when I use this word. I think it may be useful to image, since we all know that sometimes a maltese and a poodle, and other dogs that are not similar in look or size, do breed, or are bred. In this case, some lonely Neanderthals found the Denisovans all right!
So if you think you have an uncle who is more than 4% Neanderthal...

DNA GENEALOGY BRINGS US TO THE SCIENCE OF DNA
DNA GENEALOGY is so fascinating. It seems that every day the scientists are able to lead us to our genetic and ethnic heritage, though I've met more than one person who was surprised. If we're going to trust that science, we're probably going to want to know more about it, and what information about HUMANITY AS A WHOLE IS BEING REVEALED.
IBTIMES : OLDEST DNA 400,000 YEARS OLD
"The bone, found in a cave in northern Spain known as the “Pit of Bones,” is the oldest human mitochondrial material ever sequenced. But rather than reveling in their discovery, scientists are getting frustrated.....
Svante Paabo, the director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Antrhopolgy in Leipzig, Germany, added that the results “show that we can now study DNA from human ancestors that are hundreds of thousands of years old," adding that the discovery was “tremendously exciting."
The reason scientists are flustered? Researchers were expecting to uncover DNA from a Neanderthal, which once inhabited Europe and parts of Asia. But the DNA actually turned out to be very similar to a different kind of prehistoric people, the Denisovans, who lived thousands of miles away in what is now Siberia. First discovered in 2010, the Denisovans were a genetically distinct group of people who are known only by a pinkie bone and a tooth..."

RESEARCH YOUR FAMILY, HONE YOUR SELF KNOWLEDGE, HAVE A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE! ANCESTRY WORSHIP - A GENEALOGY
Welcome to Ancestry Worship - genealogy, a Google Blogger!
As you may notice if you begin to read past posts, and go into my archive, I'm a serious and experienced genealogist and family history researcher and writer. I love to help others break through blocks, and believe in proofing your research, holding to professional standards.
My interest in genealogy and family history includes a broad range of related interests such as history and cultural studies, anthropology, archeology, and the science of DNA. Spiritually, I am intrigued by past life regression (hypnosis) and reincarnation. Is it possible that our souls come to this earth many times in search of experiences that will move us to divinity?
I find genealogy is sometimes a spiritual quest. You may ask, How So?
I'm not a member of the Latter Day Saints though I do know that they believe our ancestors can help us with our genealogy research and I try to respect their beliefs which are centered around family life and healthy living.
One of the goals of research for members of the Latter Day Saints, a religion that originated in the 19th century, is to Baptise the Dead. In this temple ceremony or ordinance, live members of the Church welcome those who have gone before the opportunity to be Baptised in their faith so that they can be unified as a family in the After Life.
I do believe we may be reunited with others in the After Life! But then maybe some of them have reincarnated or have moved on spiritually.
Though I do not pray for help from Divinity or Ancestors in advance of my research, I've experienced some compelling synchronicities leading me to information and the right people. I've even felt at times that I was being guided or watched. I've even had dreams that helped me move in the right direction.
Those who are regressed through hypnosis for a myriad of reasons, including curing illness of the body or mind, sometimes find themselves going back in mind or memory to another life where the problem began. These days children seem to be remembering their past lives well enough to be taken seriously by their parents; truly fascinating! (I have a couple new books on order right now and hope to report into you!)
Another aspect of genealogy research for the individual who is researching their own family is that when you better understand your ancestors you may just come to understand your own life and yourself better. This is especially the case when the family has been broken, perhaps not for any other reason that immigration. Some of us have never even seen a photo of someone who is part of our genetic lineage and who looks like us!
Over the next few posts, I'll be linking to sites about DNA. DNA is revealing so much to us and so much more quickly than even the scientists anticipated. Those who have a problem with evolution or DNA science are simply not compatible with my point of view. They are welcome to keep their beliefs, as am I. Simply, I see no conflict with the notion of a Creator God or the notion of Creation and evolution. I know that conscious life is amazing and that the universe is intelligent.
HEY THANKS FOR READING ALL THIS! Now let's go forward!

WHAT ARE THE ODDS? FOUR CHILDREN BORN SAME DAY - DIFFERENT YEARS
YAHOO - BRITISH FAMILY HAS FOUR CHILDREN BORN SAME DAY - DIFFERENT YEARS
"Sam was two weeks late, the twins one month early and Ryan three days late," Scrugham said.
The family celebrated their older children's birthdays this year with two cakes, one for Sam and one for the twins, and say they plan to continue to celebrate their kids' coincidental birthdays both "individually and together."

ARISTOCRACY AND ROYALTY - A COUPLE INTERESTING LINKS! - ROYAL COORESPONDENT and ROYAL MUSINGS
Seems to me I've met several people now who say their line goes to ROBERT THE BRUCE of SCOTLAND, but I'm not sure their research proves this. By now Robert must have many thousands of descendants though.
Hey, I'm like you. I may or may not be related to some aristocrats or extinguished royal personages, but I'm interested in those who do and are alive today. What do they look like? Are they still rich? Do they all know each other? Will any of them in line for lost power get it back? Are they all marrying commoners?
Over the holidays I found some notes to myself about a couple sites that I've enjoyed reading. I'm posting the links here and on my side bar!
They are ROYAL CORRESPONDENT
and ROYAL MUSINGS
Both impress me! Check them out!
